Communities of Practice

At SCUTREA, we believe that pedagogical dialogue lies at the heart of transformative adult education. Our Communities of Practice are designed to foster meaningful conversations, collaborative learning, and shared inquiry among educators, researchers, and practitioners. These communities serve as dynamic spaces where theory meets practice, and where collective wisdom can shape more inclusive and impactful educational futures.

Led by Dr. Sharon Clancy (University of Nottingham), the promotion and development of these Communities of Practice will be guided by a commitment to nurturing sustained engagement and reflective practice across seven core themes. The archival materials available to SCUTREA will influence the future direction of the discussion and debate.

Our Core Themes:

Interconnections Between Community Practices and Learning

Exploring how social, artistic, cultural, and civic practices intersect with learning in community settings. Case studies from our archives highlight these rich interplays.

Empowering Local Initiatives

Celebrating grassroots efforts that drive educational change. Our archival materials document how local initiatives have sparked transformation and fostered lifelong learning.

Educational Spaces

Investigating how physical and social environments shape adult learning. Our resources showcase examples of inclusive, accessible learning spaces.

Inequality and Education

Examining how adult education can address systemic inequalities. Outreach programmes featured in our archives demonstrate how education can empower underrepresented communities.

The Role of Educators

Highlighting educators as catalysts for community learning. Our archives spotlight innovative pedagogical approaches that inspire and sustain adult education.

Interdisciplinary Perspectives

Encouraging cross-disciplinary dialogue to deepen our understanding of community learning. Collaborations documented in our materials illustrate the power of diverse perspectives.

Linking Institutions and Civic Engagement

Exploring how partnerships between educational institutions and community organisations can amplify impact. Our archives offer compelling examples of such collaborations in action.
